Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary In an effort towards significantly reducing the intergenerational transmission of a wide range of mental disorders by intervening on parenting practices and clinically significant emotional dysregulation in parents and their preschool aged children, the study pilot tests an integrated mental health and parenting intervention delivered via telehealth for 12 emotionally dysregulated parents with a history of substance misuse, in order to complete several foundational steps prior to conducting a larger scale randomized controlled trial. The 20-week group therapy integrates two evidence-based interventions: 1) Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills - targeting parental emotion dysregulation and substance misuse, and 2) Parent Training (PT) - targeting parenting behaviors linked to children’s mental health. The telehealth format enhances the scalability of the intervention and reduces many of the common barriers to access that parents face when seeking treatment for themselves or their children.

Collection Notes:  View help for Collection Notes Inclusion Criteria:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Have at least partial custody of a 3-6 year old child
  • Proficient in English
  • Have internet access
  • Endorse elevated emotion dysregulation (a score greater than 88 on the DERS, equivalent to +.5 SD above a normative score; Ritschel, Tone, Schoemann, & Lim, 2015)
  • Meet criteria for a past SUD (i.e., in the past 5 years) for any of the following DSM-5 defined disorders: alcohol, cannabis, hallucinogenic, inhalant, opioid, sedative/hypnotic/anxiolytic, or stimulant.
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Current (past 12 months) substance use disorder
  • Have a developmental disability
  • Have a child with a developmental disability
  • Determined to have a have a low IQ score (IQ less than 70) on the PPVT-IV at clinical intake
  • Are psychotic as determined by the SCID 5
  • Actively manic or psychotic as determined by clinical observation
  • Actively suicidal with an active plan as determined by the SCID 5 and/or PHQ-9
  • Determined to be at high risk of violence towards others by clinical judgement
  • Require a higher level or different form of care. May be bypassed if they they secure an individual therapy provider.

Measures administered in the surveys:
  • Demographic Questionnaire
  • Children’s Behavior Checklist
  • Parenting Stress Index Short Form

Waves & Follow-up Times:
There are 2 waves of data.
  • Wave 1 Baseline was administered at day 0.
  • Wave 2 Followup was administered approximately at day 140.

Observations:
In total, there are 12 unique participants across all the data files submitted. There are 22 data rows and 620 data variables.
