This data file is the product of a study on politics and mass media in Japan, with a particular emphasis on gaffes made by cabinet ministers. The dataset contains the basic information necessary to replicate the tables and figures in our published paper, “Political Speech, Scandals, and the News Media in Japan.” This includes variables on the positions held by cabinet ministers, the location of the gaffe, the duration of news coverage on each gaffe for two newspapers, the types of political actors who criticized the ministers’ gaffes, and whether the gaffe was linked to the minister's resignation from 1960 to 2024. The data does not contain the actual names of the cabinet ministers or the text of the gaffes.
The list of problematic statements made by cabinet ministers was compiled using several books and two newspaper databases. Details of the data collection process are provided in a separate document.
