We measure whether downward flexible compensation schemes, such as bonuses, alleviate the labor market effects of downward rigid base wages. The study exploits a sharp unexpected appreciation of the Swiss franc, as well as detailed data on wages, income, and the labor market history of the Swiss working age population.
