The Excel database is part of a study that addresses the treatment of rural generalist journalism on the abandonment of the countryside in a Spanish province (Valladolid). Based on the global data presented here, a content analysis of 226 journalistic pieces from two digital newspapers was carried out: El Norte de Castilla digital (the only regional newspaper in the autonomous community to which Valladolid belongs) and El Día de Valladolid digital (the strictly local newspaper) in order to detect causes, consequences and solutions provided in journalism on the rural exodus from economic, political, socio-cultural and environmental parameters. The main objectives of the study were twofold. On the one hand, to find out how rural journalism deals with the abandonment of the countryside for Valladolid's readers. Two secondary objectives were derived from this objective: (1) To find out what are the causes, consequences and solutions provided by rural journalism on the exodus from the countryside to the citizens of the province of Valladolid; and (2) To find out what is the professional practice of rural journalism on the abandonment of the countryside. On the other hand, the second main objective was to establish proposals for improvement in rural journalism in order to facilitate its professional practice and contribute in some way to solving the problem of rural depopulation. The data were collected between 1 February and 30 November 2023. In addition to the two aforementioned digital newspapers, the data include those of four specialised digital agricultural magazines: ‘Empresa agraria’, ‘Campo.es’, ‘Tierras.Agricultura’ and ‘Agronews Castilla y León’. It should be noted that, once all the data had been incorporated, several transformations were carried out with the PowerQuery Editor tool, which allowed the data to be positioned in an appropriate way in order to subsequently generate dynamic tables in Excel.

Collection Notes:  View help for Collection Notes This database on the journalistic treatment of rural exodus is a shared-use Excel Web 365 workbook designed to facilitate the storage and extraction of information for analysis. This workbook was structured in several sheets related to each other by a common field: CODIGO. This identifier is the numeric field that stores the number associated with each publication. The collection of information was distributed among the different members of the research group so that each one handled his or her own codes. As the data was collected, each member recorded it in the Excel workbook, on the corresponding sheet and in the row associated with the code of the publication being analysed. For example, on the ‘PUBLICACION’ sheet, there are several fields filled in for the selected newspapers: ‘CODIGO’, ‘PERIODICO’, ‘S1’ (section within the newspaper), “S2”, ‘S3’, etc. Some fields are calculated fields (in pink), which were then needed for the generation of summaries.  Once all the data had been recorded, summaries were generated. First, several transformations were carried out with the PowerQuery Editor tool, which allowed the data to be placed in a suitable form in order to be able to generate pivot tables in Excel later on. The sheet ‘RESUMENES-PUBLICACION’ incorporates several pivot tables that allow summarising some of the fields that collect data from the newspapers.  For example, the distribution of genres in the total number of newspapers, or the same distribution, but grouped by ‘PERIODICO’.

Methodology

Sampling:  View help for Sampling The database incorporates two samples: one of press articles published on rural depopulation in digital format at local (Valladolid) and regional (Castilla y León) level: 226 pieces, and the other of the pieces published on rural exodus in the specialised agricultural magazines of Castilla y León: 51 pieces. All the pieces were located on the Mynews platform based on the keywords: Depopulation, Rural exodus, Spain emptied, Rural abandonment, Abandonment of the countryside and Repopulation.

Weights:  View help for Weights In order to unravel the rural journalism carried out on the abandonment of the countryside and based on the theories of format, agenda and framing, an analysis template was drawn up which was structured in blocks with basic general data, as well as specific data on rural journalistic work.  Thus, headline and body of the journalistic genre analysed (informative, interpretative and opinion) were broken down, and by means of lists obtained from the literature review and the aforementioned interviews, grouped topics on rural depopulation were differentiated, as well as its possible causes, consequences and solutions from a political, economic, socio-cultural and environmental perspective. A codebook explaining the decisions taken was attached to the template.
