Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary Heir apparent Queen Leonor II of Spain, Princess of Asturias, is ordinal numbered in succession to Spanish monarch Leonor I of Spain, Queen of Navarre. Both Spanish monarchs, Queen Leonor I and Queen Leonor II, are descendentes from an ancestor of the Spanish King John I of Castile and León, originated from the Asturleonese-Barcelona dynasty the-then direct-lineage-frontier admission to the House of Trastámara, which was later incorporated into the House of Habsburg and then the House of Bourbon, the current royal house. Queen Leonor I of Navarre reigned over the independent Kingdom of Navarre in Spain from January 28, 1479 to February 12, 1479. Leonor I was the great-granddaughter of Spanish King John I of Castile and León. Leonor II is the descendant of the unified one Kingdom of Spain's first monarch Queen Joanna I who was daughter of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II. Queen Isabella I was the great-granddaughter of the Spanish King John I of Castile and León through his elder son King Henry III and grandson King John II of Castile and León. King Ferdinand II was the great-grandson of the Spanish King John I of Castile and León through his younger son King Ferdinand I and grandson King John II of Aragon and Navarre. Queen Leonor I of Navarre was sister of King Ferdinand II of Aragon, Valencia, Sardinia, Majorca and Count of Barcelona. Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II were married on October 19, 1469, with the aim of jointly ruling the North Spanish kingdoms, which first appeared as the Kingdom of Spain. In order to the formation of a Union of Kingdoms of Spain, they were also granted the title of Catholic King and Queen of Spain in the papal bullsheet "Si convenit" issued by Pope Alexander VI on December 19, 1496. Consequently, on March 14, 1516, all Spanish kingdoms and crowns were united into one Kingdom of Spain under their grandson, King Charles I of Spain. Their daughter, Queen Joanna I of North Spain, also reigned as co-queen of the Kingdom of Spain, and the monarchy was incorporated into the Habsburg dynasty through Joanna's jure uxoris husband, Felipe I of Spain, Prince of Rome. Felipe I was the great-great-grandson of the Spanish King Ferdinand I of Aragon from his daughter's side and Joanna was a great grand-daughter from his son's side. But Felipe was born into the Habsburg dynasty of his father Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Felipe I was also descended from the Bourbon dynasty by his mother Mary and grandmother Isabella of Bourbon. Therefore, the Spanish monarchy also became part of the House of Habsburg. The continued Spanish royal family of Habsburg dynasty became intertwined with the Catholic tradition's Bourbon dynasty which was a Spanish ancestry, that officially ascended to the Spanish throne on November 1, 1700, with the reign of King Felipe V of Spain, as the currently reigning King Felipe VI of Spain is his ordinal numbered succession in the first line of Spanish royal dynastic monarchy. Corazón Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, Princess of Asturias and Ledizia Sofía de Borbón y Ortiz, Infanta of Spain were born to King Felipe IV and Queen Letizia.
