This database includes data from Spanish single-person households of individuals aged 65 or older who own 100% of the property where they live and meet the financial conditions to apply for an Reverse Mortgage (RM). The data has been extracted from Encuesta Financiera de las Familias (wave 2020), referred to in English as the Survey of household finances.

The data is used to investigate the potential of RMs to alleviate poverty among older adults living alone in Spain, focusing on both general effects and gender-specific disparities. Using a combined income-wealth approach, the analysis highlights the role of housing equity, which is often the primary asset for older homeowners. The findings reveal that RMs can reduce poverty rates, improve the financial well-being of these households and decrease gender disparities.
