Tropical deforestation is a striking form of land cover transformation resulting in a complex mosaic of shifting land-use patterns across space and time. Research on the underlying causes of forest conversion and the environmental consequences has been prolific, yet few scholars have assessed long term impacts on the socio-economic welfare of the frontier inhabitants along with the reciprocal effects of income and wealth on land use. Moreover, limited research addresses the impacts of these post-deforestation trajectories on employment, migration, and inequality. These lacunae are directly related to the difficulty of obtaining the spatial panel data required to track and evaluate these dynamic processes. Nevertheless, as the “old frontier” expands in tropical forest zones, it becomes critical to understand the dynamic economic and landscape processes that follow deforestation. This dataset provides opportunities to address these issues by adding a fifth round to a previous spatial panel survey of farm households in the heavily deforested state of Rondônia, Brazil.

The surveys were administered face-to-face at the lot owner’s residence by pairs of trained interviewers, reporting to field coordinators and project PIs. The responses for the 1996, 2000 and 2005 waves were collected on paper and transcribed daily by the interviewers. The responses for the 2009 and 2019 waves were input directly on tablets by the interviewers on site. The survey teams prioritized interviewing owners of all original lots, those added in prior waves, and a random sample in any new settlements, plus supplemental samples to maintain representativeness by municipality population and increase sample size as budget allowed. This included tracking non-resident lot owners to their new locations if necessary in 2005, 2009 and 2019. Family members who left the original households were also tracked in 2005 and 2009 to the extent that time allowed.
