Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary
The NYU Science & Religion Survey is a nationally representative survey conducted by NORC using their AmeriSpeak Panel. The survey focuses on Americans' attitudes towards science and religion both, including items about confidence, identities, and policy preferences. A series of questions explores Americans' discussion networks for topics related to science and religion. Another set asks church-goers about actions (if any) their church took in response to the COVID pandemic. Additional variables ask about respondents' political views, demographic characteristics and use of various social media platforms.

Methodology

Sampling:  View help for Sampling The sample was selected from the AmeriSpeak Panel using sampling strata based on religion, age, race/Hispanic ethnicity, education, and gender (48 sampling strata in total).  The size of the selected sample per sampling stratum was determined by the population distribution for each stratum. In addition, sample selection took into account expected differential survey completion rates by demographic groups so that the set of panel members with a completed interview for a study is a representative sample of the target population. If a panel household has one more than one active adult panel member, only one adult in the household is eligible for selection (random within-household sampling). Panelists selected for an AmeriSpeak study earlier in the business week are not eligible for sample selection until the following business week.

Scales:  View help for Scales The variable OCCUPY20_CODED uses the 2018 Standard Occupational Classification. Throughout the survey, several Likert-type scales were used. Each is described in the codebook.
Weights:  View help for Weights WEIGHT1 is a weight variable that is weighted to the general population and should be used for most analyses. Additional information about alternative weights can be found in the codebook.
