Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary This data archive consists of a digitized database of all of India's daily minimum wages across states and detailed industries for the years 1983, 1985/86, 1993, 1998, 2004, and 2006. These data are otherwise only available on paper and/or pdf documents. The data are provided as Excel and Stata files, including aggregate codes by broad industry group that the principal investigators assigned during their research.

Collection Notes:  View help for Collection Notes The Principal Investigators created this database on state- and industry-level daily minimum wage rates using the annual Report on the Working of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 published by the Government of India’s Labour Bureau. The more recent issues of this report were available as pdf files; earlier years had to be obtained from local sources as hard copies and converted into an electronic database. The PI's also assigned industry codes aggregated into five broad categories (agriculture and forestry, mining, construction, services, and manufacturing).  In the files labeled as "r1", the PI's assigned industry codes aggregated into eight broad categories (agriculture; fishing; forestry; mining; construction & utilities; transport, storage, communications; services; and manufacturing).
