Project Description

Summary: This dataset contains counts of schools per United States ZIP code tabulation area (ZCTA) from 2000 through 2018. Counts are broken down by type of school (public, charter, magnet, or private) and grade level (elementary, middle, or high).

A ZIP code to ZCTA crosswalk must be used to combine this dataset with ZIP code geocoded data. Such a crosswalk is available on the UDS Mapper website at https://udsmapper.org/zip-code-to-zcta-crosswalk/. Sample code for merging the UDS Mapper crosswalk with NaNDA datasets is available on the NaNDA repository at https://www.openicpsr.org/openicpsr/project/120088/.

Methodology

Data Source:

Counts of public, charter, and magnet schools from 2000-2018 come from the U. S. Department of Education’s Common Core of Data (CCD).
Private school counts come from the Private School Universe Survey (PSS).
The 2010 TIGER/Line shapefiles for ZIP code tabulation areas were used to assign schools to tracts.
