The
dataset and the associated computer code replicate the results reported in the
paper “WHAT MOTIVATES AN OLIGARCHIC ELITE TO DEMOCRATIZE? EVIDENCE FROM THE
ROLL CALL VOTE ON THE GREAT REFORM ACT OF 1832”. The goal of the project is to
understand the origins of democracy in general and the motivation behind the
Great Reform Act of 1832 in particular. The data are used to study the roll
call vote on March 22 1831.

1) Dataset “seat_dataset.dta”: The unit of analysis is one of the 489 English
or one of the 24 Welsh seats of the British House of Common that existed in
1830.
2) Dataset “constituency_dataset.dta”: the unit of analysis is one of the 244
English constituencies.
