Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary The Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (KUCDD), in partnership with community agencies across a midwestern state, conducted a three-year project, to examine the feasibility, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of implementing a career development intervention using telehealth for adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) who live in rural areas.  The goal of this project is to evaluate effective services delivered via telehealth to promote employment for people waiting for formal HCBS services in a midwestern state.  The intervention uses the Self-Determined Career Development Model (SDCDM), an evidence-based intervention designed for people with IDD.  Researchers at KUCDD have demonstrated that the SDCDM is effective in promoting self-determination and employment.  The objectives are 1) train facilitators to implement the SDCDM via telehealth; 2) randomly assign participants to waitlist control or intervention groups; 3) deliver the SDCDM via telehealth to the intervention group for two years and the waitlist control group in year 2; and 4) evaluate and disseminate the results.  Anticipated outcomes included 1) enhanced employment and self-determination of adults with IDD; 2) enhanced cost-effectiveness of delivering the intervention via telehealth; and 3) documented best practices for using telehealth with adults with IDD.

Data Source:  View help for Data Source This project implemented a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) to evaluate the intervention's effectiveness. Participants were randomized into either an intervention group or a control group at the trial's start, with implementation lasting one year. Outcome assessments were conducted at the beginning, middle, and end of implementation, with an additional follow-up data point collected six months post-intervention. Participants were recruited in three annual cohorts: Cohort 1 (September 2021 - May 2022) included 13 participants (7 intervention, 6 waitlist), Cohort 2 (June 2022 - November 2022) included 15 participants (9 intervention, 6 waitlist), and Cohort 3 (March 2023 - September 2023) included 13 participants (9 intervention, 4 waitlist). In total, the study comprised 41 participants, with 25 in the intervention group and 16 in the control group.
