Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of spinal segmental sensitization syndrome (SSS), a common and disabling  regional pain disorder, among patients visiting physical medicine and rehabilitation centers (PM&RCs) in Peru for chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMSP). DESIGN: An observational study was conducted from March to July 2023. Seven PM&RCs from five cities participated, representing three care systems: Social Security (SS), Ministry of Health (MS), and Private Practice (PP). Informed consent was obtained from all patients. Diagnosis was made using the Nakazato and Romero criteria. Information was recorded in standardized files and organized in a spreadsheet. RESULTS: Overall, 319 patients were enrolled (female: 73.4%, median age: 56.9 years). Most participants belonged to the SS system. The prevalence of SSS was 53.3%, with 69.1%, 42.2%, and 13.8% of cases in the SS, MS and PP groups, respectively. The highest percentage of affected individuals were aged ≥65 years. The most commonly affected segments  were the lumbosacral and lumbar regions, followed by the lower and middle cervical levels. Patients with more active occupations had a higher prevalence. Vertebral disorders are the most commonly associated pathology with SSS. CONCLUSION: SSS prevalence was high in patients who visited PM&RCs for CMSP, with variations depending on the care system.
