Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary The Japanese Municipal Survey Regarding Economic Structures and Social Issues, 2019 [Chihojichitai nitaisuru keizai kozo ya shakaimondai ni kansuru anketo chosa] is a cross-panel study of municipal officials' attitudes towards major socioeconomic issues facing their localities in 2019-2020. Questioned included basic demographic information, attitudes towards various social, economic, and administration issues, attitudes towards labor migration and non-citizens' participation in local life, and the presence of, or future plans to, enact policies to promote migration, integration of non-citizens, or the employment of non-citizens. The survey was conducted by mail between November and December 2019. Respondents were offered the opportunity to respond by mail through the included Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE), online form, or fax. Respondents were sent a reminder postcard three weeks after the initial mailing. Responses were accepted until August 2020. The surveys were directed towards the offices responsible for industrial promotion and labor policy (sangyō shinkō rōdō seisaku tantō). A subtotal of 825 valid responses was received, of which 7 were duplicated responses from the same municipalities. In cases where one response was more detailed (free-response questions were answered, or census data was given more precisely rather than rough estimates, etc.), that response was used. In the rest of the cases, I kept the latest recorded response and discarded earlier ones. This left a total of 818 valid responses were received for a response rate of 46.98%.
