Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary An Arc GIS PRO shapefile "London coaches" mapping the routes used by advertised and licensed stagecoaches and Royal Mail coaches radiating from London in England & Wales in 1819 and 1836. The data for 1819 is from the list of stagecoaches leaving London Inns in Cary's New Itinerary of 1819. The data for 1836 is from two sources; the "Directory of Stage Coach Services 1836" compiled by Bates (1969) and from the Table of Licensed Stagecoach Services for London published in Robson's London Directory of 1836. The 1836 list from Robson includes short stage services within London. The mapped service routes includes information on the terminus of the service, intermediate stops, coach names, and for 1836 start times and duration of the journey, number of licensed passengers and licensed distance. The mapping makes use of the turnpike roads shapefile also deposited at openicprs.
