Project Description
Summary:
View help for Summary
This project was designed to assess Canadian scientists overall views about public engagement in the context of science communication choices about specific tactics they might consider using as part of their engagement efforts. The survey includes random assignment so that respondents were either asked about engagement goals, objectives, and tactics in the context of either regular face-to-face engagement or protest-specific engagement. Michigan State IRB #x17-1485e.

The population for the project consisted of scientists from 20 Canadian research universities who were listed in the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) recipient database as having received a “Discovery Grant” between 2012 and 2017. The universities were selected either because they were among the largest research universities or to ensure that each province was represented.

Methodology
Response Rate:
View help for Response Rate
The initial population included 6,984 email addresses of which 214 were returned as undeliverable. In the end, after four emails between December 2017 and January 2018 (with a break over the Christmas holidays), 1,141 scientists completed the survey for a response rate of 17 percent.
Sampling:

The project used an attempted census of a defined population. Two research assistants manually searched online websites for email addresses for respondents in the database. The initial population included 6,984 email addresses of which 214 were returned as undeliverable.
